Good afternoon,
The North Carolina Forest Service is scheduled to conduct a prescribed burn this Thursday, February 14th, on a remote portion of the GE Wilmington site. Prescribed burning is a critical management tool that benefits forests, wildlife and the environment. Depending on wind direction, residents near the site may notice smoke while the prescribed burn is taking place. The burn is taking place on the northern most boundary of the GE property (in other words, not along our border) and the whole process will be managed and overseen by the North Carolina Forest Service.
The GE property is forest stewardship certified by the North Carolina Forest Service. This certification reinforces the company’s commitment to the maintenance and enhancement of the forest on its 1,600 acre site. Prescribed burns such as this are critical to protecting the overall health of the forest and also help prevent forest fires associated with lightning etc. as they remove dry underbrush. Similar burns have occurred at Carolina Beach State Park and other facilities around New Hanover and Brunswick counties. You may see some reference to the prescribed burning in the local media on Thursday.
Please let us know if you have any questions and have a great week.
