Happy New Year everyone!  A couple of items of interest from your Community Watch Managers.
(1)  Many residents heard what sounded like nearby automatic gun fire over the holidays and several called 911 to report it. A Sheriff’s deputy immediately responded, but found no evidence to indicate where the shots originated.  A record of the incident is on file with the Sheriff and so if a similar incident occurs, please call 911 again.  Unlike the city of Wilmington, the county does not have a “ShotSpotter” gunfire detection system, so it’s up to residents to report anything we hear. On the positive side, there was no damage done to any community property and we’re hoping this was an isolated event.

(2)   Please continue to watch your speed on Chair Road.  The difference between going 40 mph and 50 mph is significant if you need to stop your car unexpectedly.

(3)  The popular NHC Sheriff’s Citizens Academy is now accepting applications for enrolling for the Spring 2020 class. This will be the 20th class offered by the NHC Sheriff’s Office and will run from March 3 through May 12, 2020. The course is FREE and open to NHC residents who are interested in the wide range of activities and programs handled by the Sheriff’s Office. The class is made up of about 45 people and meets every Tuesday night, typically from 6 to 9 pm. The classes take place at the Sheriff’s Office (in Castle Hayne) or at the location of the night’s demonstration.

You can download the application from the River Bluffs Portal (go to Community Watch Club, select “library” and open the Citizen’s Academy form).  You can also download it from the Sheriff’s Website (see below). Feel free to contact Alan Morris or Jane Love if you’d like to get more information on the class. [Please note: the dates of the course on the website haven’t been updated, but the other information is correct.]

Here’s to a safe and quiet 2020 in our beautiful community.  Thanks for all you do to watch out for your neighbors. That’s the heart of this program!
